It has been reported that PIP (Poly Implant Prothese) breast implants have not undergone complete safety checks. The issue came to light after the French Society of Reconstructive and Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons noticed PIP implants were rupturing more quickly than the other types of implants.

The implants are filled with a silicone gel that is possibly missing a vital protective coating which is essential for preventing splitting and leaking.

Up to 50,000 British women have received PIP implants. The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons has warned women with breast implants to check which brand was used.  

The manufacturer of the silicone has said there had been no safety tests on the gel, which they thought was being used to make mattresses. To make matters worse the company which was once the world’s third largest manufacturer of implants, has since gone into liquidation. The NHS will remove damaged implants but they won’t pay for new ones. This means that anybody who wants to have their implants replaced will have to pay for it privately.
