Deprived children at greater risk on the road

« Back to Blog

A study conducted in the UK has found that children from poorer areas are at a greater risk on the roads in comparison to children from richer areas.

Road Safety Analysis examined 120,000 crashes involving children from the years 2004 - 2008. The company used postcodes to compare risk levels with children up to the age of 15 across 408 local authority areas.

The study was able to conclude that youngsters in Preston are five times more likely to be injured than children in London’s wealthy boroughs of Kensington and Chelsea.

In one area in Preston children have a 1 in 206 chance of being hurt on the road every year. This is more than twice as likely when compared to the national average of a 1 in 427 chance. In Kensington and Chelsea children have a 1 in 1,158 chance of being injured.

Dan Campsall from the Road Safety Analysis has stated that children from deprived areas are more likely to live near major urban thoroughfares and to walk and ride bikes rather than being driven.

He also added that some communities may not be receiving the same quality and focus of education on road safety.
