Postman bites back
A postman who suffered a dog bite to his bottom is biting back in a new campaign by the Royal Mail to improve the safety for its delivery staff.
David Power was admitted to hospital after being bitten on the bottom by a dog when delivering post near Builth Wells, Powys. The bite was not deep but the injury had to be cleaned and a tetanus jab was also given to the postman.
In 2009, there were 298 dog attacks on postmen and women in Wales alone and 5,091 dog attacks in the UK as a whole.
A Royal Mail spokeswoman said dogs could be a particular pest but cats, geese and even ducks were also seen as a threat.
The Royal Mail is keen to highlight this incident in order to encourage home-owners with pets to keep their animals under control. Attacks on Royal Mail delivery staff are expected to increase now schools are breaking up for the summer as parents and children are at home and pets are allowed in the garden.
