Sainsburys exploding coffee machines
A coffee machine at a Sainsbury’s café at the Kingsmead Centre in Farnborough has exploded injuring 15 people, with 6 of them receiving hospital treatment.
A witness at the scene said "There was a loud bang and the coffee machine shot 20ft off the counter. The boiler had split completely open and sent boiling hot water and steam everywhere. I saw people with cuts and burns."
A Sainsbury’s spokesman indicated that the blast occurred when a pipe in the industrial coffee machine ruptured causing the explosion. Sainsburys have since taken Elektra coffee machines out of service at all of their stores.
Sainsburys could face potential claims from both customers and employees who suffered injury as a result of the explosion. As the owners/occupiers of the café Sainsburys are responsible for ensuring the safety of their customers. As an employer Sainsburys must take steps to prevent accidents at work, this would include the provision of safe equipment that is regularly inspected and maintained.
