A teacher who permanently damaged her voice as she struggled to make herself heard in a noisy classroom has received £145,000 from her employee for her injuries and the impact they will have on her future career.

Joyce Walters taught English at Harlington adult education centre in Hillingdon. She was given a classroom next to a noisy children’s playground. Mrs. Walters constantly had to raise her voice and repeat herself in order to teach over the nearby noise.

Within months of starting she developed a sore throat. She repeatedly asked her employer for help but they did not do enough. Mrs Walters throat became worse and through exploratory surgery it was revealed that she had developed nodules on her vocal cords.

Mrs Walters is currently unable to work due to her injuries. Said that "Teaching was my calling. I adored the classroom and miss it so much, but the problems with my voice make it impossible for me to ever go back."
