Allergic reaction causes woman hospitalisation for 3 days and almost killed her

« Back to Blog

A woman was hospitalised in the high dependancy unit after using a bottle of hair dye. After applying the dye to her hair it started to weep with pus and caused her skin to inch uncontrollably. However, within 2 days her symptoms had worsened further and was life threatening.

The woman suffered a number of symptoms including blistering and swelling around her eyes which led to her whole face swelling up and her cheeks swelled to double there size and also brusing across her face. Also the yellow pus which had started to ooze from her scalp was likened to the smell of burning flesh. However, this was not the worst of her symptoms. Her throat started to close up and she struggled to breathe.  Furthermore she was rushed to hospital with a racing heartbeat which when measured was around 180bpm which is the same rate as that of a heart attack.

The woman had decided to dye her hair due to her starting to go grey in her early twenties. Her reaction was caused by the chemical para-phenylenediamine which is also known as PPD. It is a common allergen and is banned in many European countries. It can be found it all types of products from textiles to cosmetics. People may become allergic to it even after previous exposures without any problems and this is a reason a patch test(also known as a strand test) is important. Doing a patch test on a small patch of hair can show if there is an allergic reaction and also if there is new chemicals in the product can check you are not allergic to these before you put the product on your hair. She had not done a patch test 48 hours before dying her hair as recommended as she had used this product before and had not reacted to it.

We act for a number of clients who have suffered allegic reactions from hair products.
