Hair transplant treatment being used for over-plucked eyebrows
A more modern method of disguising overplucked eyebrows has created a surge in women having hair transplant surgery on their eyebrows. This treatment was initially used for women whose eyebrows had thinned due to medical or genetic conditions but has had a high demand recently from other women too.
The transplant uses one of the same methods that are used for thinning hair in hair transplants by taking follicles from the back of their heads. For this treatment a narrow strip of hair is taken from behind the ear. It is very carefully chosen with the hair that most closely matches the colour and texture of the eyebrows being taken. This strip of hair will contain around 400-500 hairs and the strip is about an inch long. After this each hair has to be separated under a microscope and then transplanted into two small holes in the patient’s eyebrows under local anaesthetic and with a fine needle. It involves two surgeons working at the same time to complete the transplant and it takes two to three hours to complete. If the implant is successful then the hair should grow and renew itself.
However the implanted hair will grow a lot quicker than normal eyebrow hair and this means that it will have to be trimmed a lot more often, usually every two to three weeks. The clients are advised that they should not put make up on during the recovery to reduce the risk of infection. The treatment can also result in swelling and bruising and therefore the patients will be given ice packs, painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs.
