Back pain victims suffer needlessly
Some people who have been suffering from back pain for years may not have been suffering with pain from their back at all but from their nerves instead.
It is estimated that a third of Britons that have been suffering with back pain are actually suffering with neuropathic pain.
Neuropathic pain is caused by damage or changes to the nerves. This leads them to become oversensitive and irritated and this pain worsens over time. It is often triggered by mechanical problems such as a slipped disc which can lead to irritating the nerves. Neuropathic pain can also be caused by medical problems such as diabetes and shingles.
Back pain symptoms include an aching or throbbing sensation whereas neuropathic symptoms are described as a shooting, stabbing, electric-shock type pain which is often described as a burning, prickling feeling. However, both types of pain can be experience at the same time.
Also, back pain is treated differently to neuropathic pain. Drugs such as ibruprofen and paracetamol do not work for neuropathic pain as these drugs only block the pain receptors and not the actually nerves themselves.
If neuropathic pain is not treated properly the pain can become chronic and the nerves can become permanently irritated.
