New technology could mean the end of unsightly facial hair

« Back to Blog

Permanent hair removal treatment has become popular over the past few years with laser hair removal being the most popular method.

Laser hair removal procedure requires a number of treatments as the hair could only be treated at the growth stage and not all hairs are at the growth stage at the same time. Patients are usually hair free within eight to ten treatments and these are carried out at four to six week intervals.

Laser treatment works well on people with dark hair, but does not work well if you have blonde, red, grey or white hair. The treatment works well on people with dark hair as the light energy is reflected by the pale skin around the hair and then the dark pigment in the hair absorbs it and it is then transformed into heat, This heat destroys the hair at the root, damaging the follicle and preventing regrowth of the hair. However pale hair cannot absorb the light energy.

Laser treatment does not work on any type of hair if you are dark skinned as the skin will absorb to much light energy and therefore this will lead to burns.

A new treatment has been developed which now means that blonde could be permanently hair free. Through a tweezer like device the tweezer uses ultrasound waves to remove the hair. These waves travel down to the root of the hair and produces heat which destroys the hair so it falls out instantly. The hair cannot regrow as the ultrasound waves damage the follicle. This treatment is said to be pain free as the ultrasound waves do not affect the surrounding skin.

However, the treatment does have some downsides. Only one hair at a time can be treated and therefore it is unsuitable for large areas. Also only hairs that are long enough to be grasped by tweezers can be treated and therefore people will need a number of sessions.
