7 year old contracts salmonella in Cape Verde
A seven year old girl from Nottingham became ill after contracting salmonella while on holiday at the Rui Funana resort in Cape Verde. Disappointingly the family’s complaints about the food standards and hygiene are similar to those made by previous guests of these sister hotels.
School injuries lead to successful claims
More than 10 children a week are securing compensation for injuries sustained in classrooms, sports fields and playgrounds. Information obtained under the Freedom of Information Act shows that last year there were nearly 400 successful claims, with more than £2.25m in compensation being paid out to pupils who have had accidents at school.
Successful compensation awards include:
-
£33,500 awarded to a pupil who missed the safety mat when performing the high jump in a PE lesson
-
£23,000 for a pupil who slipped on ice at school
Temporary playground leaves permanent scarring
An 11 year old boy has received £3,250 in an out of court settlement for the cuts to his shins that he suffered whilst playing in a temporary playground at school. The boy has been left with two permanent pale scars.
The boy slipped over on the wet ground of a temporary playground erected by the defendant building company. His right leg was impaled as it went underneath temporary railings that did not reach the ground.
Liability was admitted by the building company who agreed that they had been negligent by permitting the railings to be left in the condition they were.
Swimming pool supervision
A seven year old child suffered severe brain damage after he nearly drowned in a swimming pool. The young boy was with his father and brother at the time. He was not wearing arm bands and could not swim. The accident occurred as he strayed into deep water that was not supervised by a lifeguard.
