Calls for DIY tattoo kits to be banned
A UK public health group says do-it-yourself tattoo kits should not be available to buy on the internet.
The Chartered Institute of Environmental Health claims the kits do not come with the right aftercare or safety instructions which means injuries and infections are easily caused when the kits end up in the wrong hands.
A spokesman from the group said “People should be careful. Anything that is cheap by definition is not going to be any good.”
The kits are available online for under £90 but some are available for as little as £30 and no proof of having a tattooist’s licence is required when purchasing.
In the UK you have to be aged 18 or over to have a tattoo. The people allowed to carry out a tattoo on your body must have a licence to do so. Professional tattooists spend a lot of time and money in training, setting up registered premises and buying expensive equipment.
If a tattoo goes wrong because of tattoo artist’s neglect or lack of skill and care (and not just because you change your mind later about your tattoo) you can claim compensation. This could include the cost of corrective work to your tattoo or tattoo removal treatment, as well as compensation for your pain, suffering and embarrassment.
