Great grandmother’s fatal fall in hospital
A woman of 86 years old died after she suffered a terrible fall during her stay in Princess Alexandra Hospital.
The woman was being moved from her bed to toilet when she stumbled and hit her head of the wall. Her family made a claim for compensation against the NHS for poor staff training and inadequate procedures. They were awarded a five figure settlement in compensation.
The NHS are constantly faced with compensation claims where they have failed to give the requisite care to their patients. The elderly in particular are more vulnerable to falling in a hospital. Healthcare workers must comply with The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence to minimise the risk of the elderly becoming injured or in worst cases, dying.
Head injuries, hip fractures and bruising are examples of what the elderly endure after a fall. This leaves them distressed and at a loss of confidence. Families of the elderly which include their spouse, children or grandchildren are often making complaints to the NHS as they want to ensure their loved one is being treated with the upmost care.
