Listeria is a bacterium found in food that is beginning to rot. Listeria is also found in raw animal products including meat and cheese, and in soil – which can lead to it being found in vegetables.

Listeria infection causes a disease, listeriosis. Groups which are particularly at risk of listerriosis are effects pregnant women, the elderly, babies and people with a weak immune system. High levels of Listeria are found in unpasteurised cheese, milk and pâtés.

Symptoms

High temperature, muscle pains, diarrhoea, convulsions, nausea and vomiting.

Duration

Listeriosis has a longer incubation period than other common food poisoning infections. Symptoms can occur between 3-70 days from being infected, but usually at around 21 days. The duration period can last from a few days up to a few months which often requires hospital attention.

Prevention

Take caution with the food you eat e.g. check meats are cooked properly throughout. Do not drink unpasteurised milk. Wash hands regularly.
