University research in America has shown that a hair style which has been given the nickname the “Croydon facelift”, where the hair is pulled back into a tight ponytail having the effect of a facelift, has been found to cause “traction alopecia” which leads to hair loss and bald patches.

The popular style, which has been seen worn by celebrities such as Kate Moss and Cheryl Cole, causes too much pressure on the roots of the hair causing it to fall out, and whilst it can mostly be treated, it also can be permanent.

The use of straightening irons, curling irons, hot rollers or applying chemical relaxers can also cause hair damage, such as chemical damage to the scalp or structural damage of the hair shaft.

Both occasional and regular use of such styling can also cause hair to break and even cause loss of hair right from the roots. It is recommended that hair is given a break from treatments and tight styles on occasion to give it time to recover from the pressure.
