More than 10 children a week are securing compensation for injuries sustained in classrooms, sports fields and playgrounds. Information obtained under the Freedom of Information Act shows that last year there were nearly 400 successful claims, with more than £2.25m in compensation being paid out to pupils who have had accidents at school.
Successful compensation awards include:
£33,500 awarded to a pupil who missed the safety mat when performing the high jump in a PE lesson
£23,000 for a pupil who slipped on ice at school
£3,000 for a child’s hair catching fire in a lesson
£1,000 for burns caused by a glue gun
John Ransford, chief executive of the Local Government Association, said: “Where people have a legitimate claim for compensation it’s important they are able to get the damages they’re entitled to, and that the organisation involved is able to learn from anything that went wrong.”
